Jack Hoyt - Artistic Woodturner My wood working career started in 1978, when I was a logger and had a good supply of big leaf maple burls. Soon I was making tables and doing wood carvings. In 1997, I started turning on a lathe and knew this is what I wanted to do with my life.
" I feel like a treasure hunter with the goal of finding the beauty in the grain and unlocking the soul of every piece of wood I work on. "
After joining the Northwest Washington Woodturners, I started going to demonstrations and taking lessons from everyone I could. I found my interests were different in that I liked turning root wads. They are the most challenging to turn and produce the most unusual and exquisite grain pattern. This led me to build a lathe to turn large root wads. The lathe enables me to turn up to a 6 ft in diameter object weighting 400 - 500 pounds.
The beauty and clarity of the grain in each piece I turn or carve is achieved by many hours of sanding and applying multiple coats of finish. My choice of finish is Danish Tung Oil.
My wife, Susan, and I created our business in 1998 and called it "Mountain Home Designs ". The name was inspired by the beautiful mountains that surround us in Malo, Washington, where we now live.
